About This Book

This is a compelling pre-WWI snapshot of White Rock, North Carolina, an Appalachian settlement that is one of the oldest in Western North Carolina. Centering around its main characters, missionary Frances Goodrich (The "Little Bishop of Laurel") and the doctor that she recruited from Boston, Dr. George H. Packard, the two were instrumental in establishing comprehensive schooling, medical care, and improved survival schools for the Blue Ridge settlers. Though the Laurel Hospital has long been closed and gone to ruin, the original community building has been saved and is currently being restored by Madison County Residents, Keith and Denise Flynn. If you have information about the White Rock Area, its people and its buildings, please contact the Flynns at their Face Book page called White Rock Hall: http://whiterockhall.facebook.com.
