"Jews in China" is an extensive, mainly photographic record of the subject edited by Prof. Pan Guang, an outstanding Chinese authority in the field. It covers, in successive sections, the centuries-old Jewish community in Kaifeng of which only a few, assimiliated descendants are discernible today; the scores to humdreds of Baghdadi Jewish traders who settled in Hong Kong and Shanghai in the mid-19th century; the many thousands of Jewish migrants from the tsarist Russian empire and the Soviet Union who mounted to tens of thousands in the early 20th and the tens of thousands of refugees from the Nazi holocaust who flocked to Shanghai as a sole sanctuary in 1930s and early 40s. -- from Preface.
