About This Book

This book has as it's objective the study of the novel, O Ateneu, by Raul Pompéia. It looks at the narrative process of the work from an initial discussion of it's critical reception, in three interpretative trends: a first biographical bias, fairly common until the 1940; a second, social bias, started soon after the previous one, and continuing even today; and a last, revisionist bias, most current, based on the analysis of aspects hitherto considered accessories by critics. To this end, the following discusses the theoretical nature of the narrative of memories, rising several narrative theory texts as theoretical basis of the exhibition. It is proposed, therefore, the use of terminology that seeks to categorize into three large groups the narratives of memories, according to guidance focused on the past of the action-- "retrospective narrative"-- to the present of the narration-- "presentificative"-- or narrative to the reading process and receipt of memories-- "foresight" narrative. The later analysis of various elements of the narration of the O Atheneu comes to the conclusion that the romance of Pompéia represents an example just "forward-looking narrative," in which the narrator's childhood lived at boarding school handles to make himself a victim of the system, and thus reverse the logic of the oppression that outside was submiited about O Ateneu.
