About This Book

Manuel Henrique Figueira is a Secondary School Teacher and Master of Science in Education (Specific History of Education). He has been studying the New Education in Portugal and has collaborated on other projects for the History of Education, such as the following: «High Schools in Portugal», «Portuguese Dictionary of Educators» and «Memories of the Portuguese High School».


«Um Roteiro da Educação Nova em Portugal: Escolas Novas e Práticas Pedagógicas Inovadoras (1882-1935)», procura esclarecer o processo de implantação e de desenvolvimento do movimento da Educação Nova em Portugal, no período de meio século compreendido entre 1882 e 1935. Para tal, procedeu-se à identificação concreta de práticas pedagógicas inovadoras, de formas de organização das instituições escolares e de procedimentos pedagógicos. A análise efectuada permitiu evidenciar a estratégia utilizada (caracterizada por dois momentos cronológicos) e a dimensão atingida pelo movimento, assim como as principais características de que este se revestiu.

«A Roadmap of the New Education in Portugal: New schools and innovative teaching practices (1882-1935)», seeks to clarify the process of implementation and development of the New Education movement in Portugal over fifty years (between 1882 and 1935). To this end, it proceeds to the identification of specific innovative teaching practices, organizational forms of educational institutions and pedagogical procedures. This analysis has highlighted the strategy used (characterized by two chronological moments) and the size reached by the movement, as well as the main features of which it is affected.
