Sublime Visions

In the 18th century the Alps became the subject of a new type of contemplation of nature, which crystallized in the terms "sublime" and "exalted". Oscillating between fear and fascination, this sensual experience triggered an exciting borderline experience: travelers ventured to the mountain world full of longing, and projected quite different dreams onto the "wild nature" which had yet to be opened up. To what extent has the sublime character influenced architecture in the Alps from the beginning of tourism to today? Under this motto the author analyses Alpine architecture in the context of architectural history and provides a critical assessment of contemporary tourism. A book that inspires us to reflect on the future of building in the Alps and on our relationship with nature.
