"For two years I watched the new Far East history unfold from within the enemy's camp. For a newspaperman it was an unusual opportunity to cover a war from a new angle, although I would have skipped the experience gladly had Marjorie and I been able to get out to Corregidor and away from Manila after our communications failed in the Philippines on the last day of 1941. For some, plans for escape succeeded; ours failed. We had to stay. In the meantime there was a story to get, even though we were imprisoned.
