About This Book
Woudrichem, often called Woerkum popularly, is an old fortified town at a strategic point in the river area. Where the Maas and Waal merge to continue as Merwede, the reinforcement lies on the border of Holland, Gelderland and North Brabant. Woudrichem is part of the iron fortress triangle together with the fortresses Gorinchem and Loevestein Castle; later Fort Vuren was added as fourth. Woudrichem is the southernmost fortified town of the New Dutch Water Line, with many monuments that bear witness to this. The authentic character of the fortifications of the trading town of Woudrichem, such as those in the sixteenth century by Adriaen Anthonisz. have been designed and constructed, and have largely been preserved. In this publication ample attention is paid to the origin and development of the fortress, creating a clear picture of what Woudrichem is today, a beautiful protected cityscape with many monuments and a rich fishing history
