The history of muscle physiology

A pragmatic account of the history of muscle physiology, from the days of the Greek philosophers up to the time when experimental physiology began in earnest with the fundamental researches of Albrecht von Haller into muscular irritability. The focus is more attached to the theories evolved at various times by scientists as to the genesis of muscular contractions and less to the problems of the muscles as heat regulating organs and the static problems connected with muscle work.
