About This Book

Iola awoke with a start thinking she had heard a noise, then she remembered where she was and thought it must be very early in the morning. She sat up and lit a candle beside her bed, and saw from her watch that it was just after half-past-five.

This meant, she thought, that Nanny would be getting up and she decided she would get up too, as she wished to spend every second that she could with her, before she left. Last night they had sat talking for a long time and finally, because she had pressed her and pressed her.

Nanny conceded that she would ask Sir Wolfe Renton if he would consider employing a Nursery-Governess for his daughter. "You'll have me out of a job, that's what you'll do!" Nanny said, but she was smiling and Iola knew that she was protesting automatically.
