Johnson, an African American minister, surveys the problems that have beset African Americans since the Civil War by way of encouraging his fellow blacks at a time of adversity in the U.S. He urges African Americans to maintain the faith, continue to work hard, accumulate wealth, and remember that blacks have overcome obstacles in the past.
