About This Book

Collection of 59 numbered ration books ("libretas") contributed by Cuban families, sewn together with raised cord binding. Bound in at back is a small booklet with screenprint cover in the same size and shape containing an essay by Cuban ethnographer Abel Sierra Madero on the libreta and its role in Cuban life. The booklet also includes a statement from the binder, Steven C Daiber, on collecting and binding libretas. Each libreta records a family's food supply for a year, including bread, rice, meat, and eggs.
