Habits of Being contains photographs, stories and interview that deal "with our reactions, as women, to the destructive situations we find ourselves in." Issue one contains three interviews with the women who live on "SuBAMUH (Susan B. Anthony Memorial Unrest Home), a women's intentional community in Amesville, Ohio" and the author's own personal stories about some of the hard experiences of her life. The women interviewed, Crissa Cummings, Jan Griesinger, and Molly Blair, speak about coming out as lesbians in the 70s and 80s.
