About This Book
In many cities, the early 20th century is associated with the names of famous city master builders. Whether Hendrik Petrus Berlage in Amsterdam, Charles Buls in Brussels, Eugene Hénard in Paris, Karl Mayreder in Vienna or Gustav Gull in Zurich: they all played a decisive role in shaping the cityscape and have become outstanding figures in the city's history. The conditions were far from easy, for these cities were in a phase of drastic change. The rapid population growth catapulted them into the league of big cities. Cities that did not want to be overwhelmed by this development saw themselves as having the responsibility not only to accompany this process, but to actively steer it by designing a concrete urban planning vision as a guiding principle. This book is the third and last volume of the trilogy 'Designing a Big City' and focuses on city master builders in Germany's neighboring countries. It provides an overview of the work of the city master builders of this time and questions their achievements on suggestions for today's municipal urban planning.
