About This Book
Handwritten copy of a decree of Domenicus Contarenus (Domenico Contarini), Doge of Venice, of March 20, 1665, settling a dispute between the Italian and Greek Jewish communities of Corfu, with "lista della tanza" or list of members of the self-governing Jewish Tax Assessment and Collection Committee (the so-called "tansadori") under the Venetian Republic, and list of signers. The decree describes the proceedings of the Doge's hearing and his subsequent decision in favor of the more recently immigrated and substantially larger Italian congregation, granting them the same rights and privileges as the established Greek Jewish minority. The Italian congregation was represented in person by Forte and Jacob Rason; Samuel Menaḥem Pangali, the representative of the Greek Synagogue, was not present. This manuscript contains a copy (content only) of the illuminated decree as found in Columbia MS X893 Z8 vol.3 no.6; the so-called "lista della tanza" is only to be found in X893.19 D35. This copy includes the original signature of the ambassador.
