The narrative follows the ups and downs of their romance from their adolescence to their early twenties, with the power of music as a central theme. The story includes details about difficulties of dating multiple people, jealousy, race in dating, and mother-daughter relationships, following Harmony and Adonis through marriage and parenthood. The story ends with Harmony preparing to commit suicide after finding out that she has AIDS.
