Education for the individual

"The outcomes of education cannot be predetermined holds for their nefarious as well as for their benficient employments--for the individual as well as society. Certain immediate results are attainable through training ... which should not be confused with education ... Schools should be maintained by a democratic society in the first instance as a service to the individual--with whatever benefits to the society they may yield as salutary side effects."
