About This Book

In this short article for the Journal of Negro History, Houston offers a biography of John Woolman, a Quaker merchant and early abolitionist. Woolman first became exposed to the problems of the slaves on a trip to the South at the age of twenty-six. Especially concerned with Quaker ownership of slaves, he spent the rest of his life working for abolition within the Society of Friends.
