About This Book

Forty-five caps, some made more than three thousand years ago, are displayed in the Museo de Antofagasta under the curatorship of the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino. The museographer script gives an account of the social function of these textile head garments: representing the ethnic identity, or belonging to a genre or carrier position within society. Thus, the headdresses and clothing were part of a real language that conveyed identity, status and prestige. "The hats and headdresses exhibited here represent the many peoples that haveinhabited these territories over the past three thousand years. They reflect distinct ethnic groups as well as intra-group social differences that existed during those times".
