Description by the author: "This work is designed to supplement my classroom teaching and the contents of any textbooks used by the student. Many aspects of music -- harmony, counterpoint (melody) whether that of centuries sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, or twenty; rhythm, invertible counterpoint, polyphony, contrapuntal composition (canon, invention, fugue), form and analysis, orchestration - - are inadequately treated in any textbook which has been published during the past century and a half. I have included samples of compositions by several of my students; these present a conon (2 in 1), (3 in 1) and (4 in 2), a two-voice invention, a three-voice invention, a two-voice fughetta, and a theme and variations based on a medieval chorale."
