Forty miles from nowhere

Melanie LaRue and her parents, accompanied by numerous animals, spend the winter alone on an island in cook Inlet, Alaska, where they survive various adventures as well as the daily routine and isolation, and come to realize the importance of having other people around, not only for support, but for stimulation.
