About This Book

Publisher's Note

In this study the phonological structure of Standard Persian is
described on the segmental level; syllable structure and those
aspects of morphology which overlap with phonology are included
while phonetics and suprasegmentals are not discussed in detail.
The author bases bis work on generative phonology hut avoids
extensive formalization. Without confining himself to one specific
method of phonological description he attempts undogmatically
to establish the phonological System of Persian.

After specifying bis subject matter and outlining the main
problems connected with it the author proceeds to the segmental
structure choosing the system of distinctive features in their
articulatory definition as the lowest level of description.
A discussion of the distribution and combination of phonemes
and of the phonological processes follows. Syllable structure
is dealt with not only for the case of monosyllables hut also
with regard to syllabification. In his final chapter the author
treats those phonological problems which stern from the
morphological characteristics of Persian. A list of the most frequent
irregular verbs is given in the appendix.
