About This Book
Ramon Ontiveros and the Vigilante Lie presents a critical examination of recent public reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children against Ramon Ontiveros, an El Paso–based civilian who publicly branded himself as a “predator hunter” while engaging in conduct consistent with sexual exploitation and the unlawful distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Centering survivor accounts and statutory prohibitions, this paper analyzes Ramon Ontiveros' self-styled “sting” operations related conduct by deliberately impersonating multiple minors and transmitting sexually explicit images of real teenagers through dating and hookup platforms, including Grindr and Sniffies. The study argues that such conduct constitutes criminal exposure rather than protection, as the possession and distribution of CSAM are illegal irrespective of intent, moral framing, or claimed investigative purpose. By foregrounding the case of Ramon Ontiveros, this paper exposes how vigilante “predator hunting” rhetoric operates as a laundering mechanism: transforming illegal acts into performances of heroism, shielding civilian actors from scrutiny, and reframing harm as civic duty.
