About This Book

This is the first full-length English biography of Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Austria's most prominent nineteenth-century woman writer, who has never been portrayed as the human being she really was with all her strengths and weaknesses, quirks and foibles. In this portrayal, which is based on published and unpublished sources, readers experience her in all phases of her life.

The dissertation which served as the basis for this book was awarded the Austrian Cultural Institute's prize for Best Dissertation in Austrian Studies for 1995.
