About This Book
As the title says, it is the life story of a working woman as told by her. It is in fact the story of the life of Marie Frank (maiden name Bach), the mother of the German novelist Leonhard Frank. The latter wrote in his autobiographical novel "Links wo das Herz ist" (Heart on the Left) that she had published it under the pseudonym Marie Wegrainer to ensure that her husband and Leonhard's father did not find out about it for fear of embarassing him. It describes, inter alia, her life as a domestic servant. It was first published in 1914 and then re-issued in 1981 to co-incide with the centenary of Leonhard Frank's birth and is deemed by some to be an important historical record since few women from this social background wrote accounts of their life at the time.
