About This Book

The first scholarly biography of the Pskov-born artist Nikolaĭ Lokhov (1872-1948), whose mission was to educate his compatriots by presenting them images of Italian Renaissance masterworks. With this goal in mind he settled in Florence, where he prepared dozens of copies after Italian masters to be sent back to Russia. Because of the dramatic turn of events in Russia, his works ended up in American collections. The present work is based on research in state and private archives in Russia, Italy, Great-Britain and the United States.
