About This Book
The boxers, Gustavo Guty Espadas, Miguel Canto, Freddie Chato Castillo, Lupe Madera and Juan Herrera, known as 'The Last Mayan Warriors', share five circumstances in their lives: they were world champions, their sporting feats happened at the same time, they were born in the city of Mérida, are of humble origin and reached the glory, to the degree of turning the state of Yucatan into a reference of world boxing. Small in stature, but invincible giants in the ring, they tasted the honeys of success as well as the gall of defeat over time and a life of abuses and waste that plunged them into the abyss. Perhaps the most painful of knockouts and unfailing rule in the history of a boxer. Fighters at last, now without sculpted bodies or aspirations to reign in some division, continue to crown their lives with the happiness and love of their families. The last heroes of the peninsula is originally a documentary film directed by José Manuel Cravioto dedicated to these five boxers. Photographers Víctor Mendiola and Ramiro Chaves were invited to perform stills during the filming. The selection of photographs resulted in an alternative and parallel proposal of the project concreted in the publication of the book that occupies us. The content is enriched with the inclusion of polaroid snapshots taken by Iván Hernández, documentary filmmaker, during different stages of film production. "Perhaps these three fixed photographic visions, stills, intend to stop the time and to claim, before the overwhelming television image, the heroes of the quadrilateral.
