No goodness in the worm

Gay Taylor's novel No Goodness in the Worm (1930) is set in a hut where Valentine Spens (Taylor) meets furniture maker Francis Merryweather (Coppard), who delivers her from a "half-infantile, half-sexed life." Eventually she finds him merely clever, obsessed with himself, and impudent. He confuses fact and fiction. She leaves him and attempts suicide after he impregnates her best friend. The novel is based on Gay Taylor's real life relationship with short story author, A E Coppard.
