About This Book

At present, the subject of the integration of foreign migrants is frequently and intensely discussed in Germany. On the other hand, far less attention is given to the people who return to their native countries and have to try to reintegrate there. This volume deals with the effects of migration experiences on the construction of houses and examines structures and elements of German building culture, the returning emigrants during building projects or their setting up of living quarters in their country of origin. What aspects of the formal language of German architecture is exported abroad? What are the specifically 'German' elements in new buildings being constructed0in Turkey? Do transformed building typologies in the old and new native country express an identity transformed by the experience in Germany? Everyday architecture was examined above all, which is to say residential buildings and semi-public spaces, such as business and restaurants, which were newly built or altered by returning emigrants. Not only are typological elements investigated, but also ideal living spaces and concepts for use, as well as the quality and design of the new building typologies.
