About This Book

Analyzes the controversies between the monastic orders and ecclesiastic authorities regarding the implementation of the "purity of blood" statutes. The common people attacked the Conversos in spite of the conciliatory preaching of the Spanish prelate and politician Alonso de Cartagena (1384-1456). Gives an account of turmoils and harassments of Conversos in the second half of the 15th century. Discusses attempts to moderate the statutes in 1623. The concept of "purity of blood" became an obsession even when there were no more Jews and Judaizers in Spain.
