The Greatrex Family

This book is based on a true story of a family who lived in a small village in South Wales during the early 20th Century. Tom Greatrex is innkeeper of the Red Cow Inn. He and his family are very proud and earn the greatest respect from everyone in the village of Pontsticill. Tom and his wife Lily are devoted to their children who enjoy a very happy childhood with their parents. The story begins with Lily giving birth to her eighth child and there is a lot of excitement within the household as the family await the new arrival. The story moves on through the years, relating incidents encountered by the family, then on to the days when tragedy strikes which leaves them all totally devastated. Then one woman enters their lives and causes so much unhappiness, bringing the feeling of hatred. Tom regrets the day he met this woman. It is a very moving story and from a very early age the author would listen intently to the many stories related to her by her mother about her childhood. She was fascinated by these true recollections that she decided to write a book about her ancestors The Greatrex Family.
