Phoebe Apperson Hearst was the wife of George Hearst, miner, prospector, and businessman, owner of the San Francisco Examiner newspaper, and United States Senator. After his death, she engaged in philanthropic work and contributed to the University of California. Hearst contributed to National Congress of Mothers, which evolved eventually into the National Parent-Teacher Association. She helped build the Young Women's Christian Association of Asliomar in Pacifc Grove, California. In 1900, Mrs. Heast co-founded the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C. She was the mother of William Randolph Hearst.
