About This Book

Between 1925 and 1942, Guillaume de Jerphanion published the first systematic study of the churches of Cappadocia, "Une nouvelle province de l'art byzantin. Les églises rupestres de Cappadoce." Long out of print, Jerphanion's work has continued to be an important resource for scholars. The goal of this book is to update Jerphanion's information and make it more widely available. For more than twenty years, the authors made many trips to Cappadocia to verify Jerphanion's descriptions and make corrections and additions where necessary. This volume includes a USB drive of Jerphanion's work, allowing the two texts to be consulted in parallel. The authors have enriched his inventory considerably, adding around 250 new monuments and including many images that have never before been published.
