Awlād al-nās fī ʻaṣr salāṭīn al-Mamālīk

"Awlād al-Nās ("the children of the people"), was an expression used in the Mamlūk sultanate of Egypt and Syria to designate the descendants, to about the fourth generation, of the politically significant people--that is, the foreign military elite, the manumitted Mamlūks--who dominated the state"--Encyclopaedia of Islam, 3rd edition.
