About This Book

Catalogue of Lika Mutal's (b. Netherlands 1939, immigrated to Perú in 1968, lives and works in Lima and New York) production of carved stone sculptures created between 2007 and 2014. The catalogue is a testimonial account of her experince with Land Art and her conception of the return to the mystic, the sacred in relation to the earth and place, and the rituals that connect her with the living energy of the stones. In the 1970's she discovered that the stone were alive and that they have memory. Mutal's life changed forever, from that moment she never again used gloves, only her hands to feel and work the stone. Includes texts on her controversial installation "El Ojo que Llora" (Crying Eye), a monument built to remember the victims of the violence of the armed conflict unleashed by terrorism in Peru between 1980 and 2000 and which has been declared Cultural Heritage.
