About This Book
Published within the framework of the commemoration of the 200 years of the National Library of Peru (BNP), the book brings together documentary material on the history since its foundation in 1821. The history of the National Library of Peru dates back to 1568, when the Jesuit order founded the Colegio Máximo de San Pablo in Lima. In 1821, a month after proclaiming independence, General José de San Martín signed the decree creating the National Library, and in 1822 the National Library was inaugurated, with a collection of 11,256 volumes from the old Jesuit library and from private donations, including some 600 books owned by General San Martín.
