About This Book

"The book is dedicated to the study of miniatures in Armenian manuscripts of the XII - XVII centuries, in which theatrical subjects are reflected. Three key issues are considered: 1. construction of the stage; 2. basic images and genres, formed in the pre-Christian period and developed in Middle Ages; 3. reconstruction of the liturgical theater (decorations, subjects, terminology). The analysis of the miniatures is conducted on the basis of ethnographic data, ancient rituals and calendar rites. These materials are compared with the tradition of Western European theater."--Title page verso.
