This book (one in a series covering European culture from Antiquity to the present day) gives descriptions of famous literary and historical characters, the stories and events connected with their person and their reception in later ages. Each item gives a an extensive survey of the character's appearance in literature, art, music and cinema. The book includes characters from the Renaissance onwards, such as Byron, Casanova, Don Quijote, Falstaff, Faust, Luther, Mary Stuart, Napoleon, Shylock and Wilhelm Tell.
