Après avoir commencé sa vie professionnelle à l'Institut Pasteur de Casablanca, il a su porter à son plus haut niveau la recherche épidémiologique, alliant l'observation acharnée sur le terrain à l'expérimentation en laboratoire. Il a crée le premier cours d'épidémiologie à l'Institut Pasteur de Paris.
