"This handbook contains information on the 'Best Current Practices' to protect and enhance fish and wildlife resources on surface-mined land in central and southern Appalachia. Current State and Federal legislation was reviewed to determine those practices which were most compatible with the performance standards related to Best Technology Currently Available, Fish and Wildlife Plans, and Reclamation Plans. The information presented in the handbook is region specific, mentioning the risks and limitations, the approximate cost, and the maintenance and management requirements of each practice. Reclamation plans are also included, which integrate the best current practices with the restoration of specific habitats in the region"--Page iii.
