About This Book

Data on respondents' political activities and attitudes were collected during the fall of 1956 and early spring of 1957 in Wayne County, Michigan from an adult cross-section sample selected by a random, stratified procedure utilizing the precinct as a primary sampling unit. The interviews focused especially on county, district, and precinct level organization and activity as well as on related perceptions, attitudes, and behavior of the adult public toward party structure at each level. Background variables established the respondent's age, sex, race, educational level, marital status, occupation, class, political affiliation, number of children, religious preference, and relationship to the head of the household. Demographic information was also collected on the respondent's father. A section gathered geographic information related to the respondent's living experience before coming to Detroit, and outlines the respondent's behavior regarding changing residences since coming to Detroit. Questions were asked of the respondent regarding use of the phone within the home. Items probing various influences on the respondent's political attitudes and behavior were included in the interview.
