About This Book
Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates has developed a body of work that includes space development, object-making, performance, and critical engagement with many publics. Together with members of The Black Monks of Mississippi, a music ensemble, he used a two-week residency and so-called "monastic retreat" at the Serralves Foundation in Porto to further develop their collective practice. This book documents the actions and interactions which took place in both public and private spheres throughout the buildings and gardens, from playing instruments and shaping clay to posing or walking in line. With essays, an interview, and many photographs.
