After fifty years of preaching, one looks back to realize that more effective work is usually done off the platform than on it. The pulpit is inevitably remote from the pew, and the greatest problem of the preacher is to bridge the gulf. The following pages are just a glimpse of some of the problems filling the minds of those who sit listening to the sermon -- apparently so attentively, but with their thoughts actually far more occupied with their personal difficulties. The sermon is not going to solve the problem in many cases; that may hopefully come in the confidences and conversations afterwards. - Preface.
