About This Book
In this study, the place and importance of Erzurum customs as an intercontinental transit center in eighteenth century Ottoman Eastern trade was investigated. Quantitative information in the Prime Ministry Archive, prepared with the help of existing documents, was evaluated in computer environment with the help of SPSS program. The book is also the first study to depict the trade networks of small merchants (çerçi) operating on the Ottoman-Iranian border. These traders have established partnerships with those who have money to strengthen their capital structures. The difficulties threatening the Iranian silk trade in the eighteenth century resulted in the narrowing of the trade volume of Erzurum customs. However, this situation did not end for Erzurum traders. As a new product other than silk, cotton started to take its place in world trade, new products and trade networks started to form in interregional trade.
