About This Book

Hundreds of European Norsemen lived in south-west Greenland between the 9th and 15th centuries. Suddenly, and probably catastrophically, one colony, the Western Settlement, disappeared. The reasons for the extinction of a whole group of self-sufficient mediaeval farmers are still far from clear, but current archaeological work is slowly producing clues which may provide an explanation of the disaster.
