About This Book

This book traces the life of Methodist Missionary William Cross. Born in England in 1797, Cross was converted to Methodism as a young man and applied for missionary work. He served in Tonga for eight years.Losing his wife in a tragic drowning, Cross remarried in Sydney and then volunteered to lead the first Wesleyan mission to Fiji in 1835 along with David Cargill. In the next seven years until his death in 1842, Cross established Christian congregations in some of the most important Fijian chiefdoms. A particular focus of this book is the religious interaction between Fijian traditional beliefs and new Christian ideas. The book includes complete Fijian translation by Tauga Vulaono.
