Theoretical discussion of impediments to standard sociological analysis of mythical figures, using example of death god Pochó celebrated in annual dance ritual in Tenosique, Tabasco. Examines this practice first from perspective of its place in Mayan cosmogony and creation mythology, and second as demonstration of obstacles that impede ontological explanation of such events. Includes extensive (70p.) appendix transcribing group interview by author with local community members on subject of these rituals.
