About This Book

The Abreu Sodrés (ancestors of the author) were a Converso family established in Rio de Janeiro in the 16th century. They were part of a thriving Converso community of landlords, owners of sugar factories and networks of commerce. At the beginning of the 18th century, they were subject to persecution by the Inquisition, suffering imprisonments and confiscations of estates, after which they lost their prominence in the Rio de Janeiro economy and society.
