Once There Was a Farm

In 1917, for reasons that still remain mysterious to the author, her mother left her husband in Chicago and moved with her own father and two young daughters to a 160-acre hardscrabble farm without plumbing of electricity in central Virginia. Mrs. Dabney was born two years later, in 1919, and in these pages recalls her halcyon childhood there.
