"Modern painting in Rio Grande do Sul has a recent history. Academic painters appeared there towards the end of the 19th century; a more scholarly form of art history started only in the 1970s. This pioneering study gathers information on the several esthetic currents present in the state during the past 40 years, analyzing them in their historical, social, and artistic contexts.
