"In the selection and treatment of materials in the 1980's works shown in this exhibition, no surface remains rigid. No surface is 'clean' or unmodulated. In a way not possible (or desirable) to previous sculpture, the wide-range of pliant materials used almost obsessively by the current generation predicts in itself much of the character of resultant form. These works cultivate what may be called gestural or 'organic' abstraction...Given the all-important nature of their support--as wall sculptures--they may or may not conform to gravity and traditional matters of weight and balance, may or may not remain parallel to the wall, may or not 'resemble masks, icons, paintings or other wall-hung things.'
